It was planned to record Die Feen over a period of three weeks before giving two live performances in The Concert Hall in Munich. We lost our tenor during this period and when he was eventually replaced there was no time left to record so this recording was issued from parts of both these live performances. The orchestra is The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sawallisch. 1984. |
Track 4) Selig, wie die Sonne - Quintet - Die Meistersinger - Wagner |
| This is a recording made from the amphitheatre of The Theatre Royal Glasgow in early December 1976. Our daughter Kirsty was six weeks old and is being held by Peter in the wings as I sing this performance. I was called at 7-30 am and asked to sing at 5-30 that evening and after a horrendous journey from London all three of us arrived 15minutes before curtain up and I sang my first Eva. The other singers are Hans Sachs; Norman Bailey, Walter; Alan Cathcart, David; Gregory Dempsey and Magdalene; Claire Livingstone. The Orchestra of Scottish Opera is conducted by Alexander Gibson. |

| Track 11) Mild und leise - Act 3 |
| Orchestra of Welsh National Opera conducted by Reginald Goodall. |
Tristan: John Mitchinson, Brangäne: Anne Wilkens. I should have recorded this in a period laid aside especially for it in my diary but I had bronchitis and so had to record it in one week in Swansea while I was performing Tosca twice in the same week with English National Opera in London. Mr Goodall wanted it to be as close to a performance as possible so we recorded in huge sweeps of about half an act at a time and left it at that. I think this gives it its quality of being a live performance. |
